Overview:

Steven’s background includes over 14 years working as a Systems Engineer, over 10 years of service at large law firms, and over 11 years of handling client matters at smaller law firms.  He also has experience running a small law firm.  Steven is the author of a book entitled “Find Clarity and Take Control of Your Intellectual Property.”

Experience:

Steven is a seasoned intellectual property attorney specializing in drafting opinions, obtaining patents and trademarks, enforcing patents and trademarks, and defending those accused of infringing patents and/or trademarks in federal district courts around the country.  He also is experienced in Unfair Competition claims under the Lanham Act.  Steven has experience in many different technologies including, but not limited to, medical devices, mechanical devices, internet applications, satellite systems, and souvenir items.  Mr. War is experienced in claim construction, working with experts, legal research, validity analysis, infringement analysis, motions practice, depositions, Markman hearings, and Summary Judgment motions before various District Courts.

Steven also serves as local counsel in matters before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia and the United States District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Legal Background:

Prior to starting War IP Law PLLC, Steven was the practice chair for intellectual property litigation at McNeely, Hare & War LLP. During this time, he also wrote opinions, and obtained patents and trademarks for his clients.

Before his time at McNeely, Hare & War LLP, Steven worked at several national/international law firms, including Dickstein Shapiro LLP, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, Fish & Richardson P.C., and Howrey & Simon.  At those firms he worked on all aspects of intellectual property including opinions regarding freedom to operate, validity, infringement, and due diligence.

Engineering Background:

Prior to attending law school, Steven spent fourteen years as a systems engineer for IBM’s Federal Sector Division, Computer Technology Associates (CTA), and Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC) working with various government organizations, including NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of the Army, and the United States Coast Guard. During this time, his roles included identification of user requirements, systems design, systems test and evaluation, field support, acceptance testing, and participation in various user groups. He has applied one or more of these skills to satellite systems, helicopter design, the FAA’s Voice Activation and Control System, and artificial intelligence systems.  Prior to his work as a Systems Engineer, Steven spent seven years in the United States Navy in training and as an electronics technician.

What this means to you: Steven’s background permits him to understand the technical details of your company’s products and your company’s intellectual property needs.

Admissions and Memberships:

Steven is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Steven is regularly admitted to district courts in other states as needed.  He is also a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).

Educational Background:

Steven earned his Juris Doctor degree (JD) from Georgetown University Law Center in 2000.  Prior to that, Steven earned a Master’s of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) from Syracuse University in 1990 and a Bachelor’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering (BSAE) from the University of Virginia in 1984.
